ActionStation needs full stack Web Developer (HTML/CSS/Ruby) for 10 - 16 hours/month

Hours: 10 - 16 hours/month

We're looking for a talented and flexible software developer with experience in Ruby, HTML, CSS, to take on a part-time contract to write features for and manage integrations with our email, advocacy and donation platform. The work we do is some of the most innovative online advocacy in New Zealand, offering a unique opportunity for you to have a highly leveraged impact on a critical sector of civil society. The project will require 10 - 20 hours of work upfront to write code that will integrate our CRM and CMS systems - Nationbuilder and Speakout - and then on an ongoing monthly basis your job will include:

(a) updating our site when new features come out

(b) building new features as requested

(c) theming the tools to match the ActionStation brand

(d) being on call if things break

For an experienced developer we estimate this would require approximately 10 hours a month, and we have budgeted $50/hour.

For a less experienced developer, we estimate this would require approximately 16 hours a month, and we have budgeted $30/hour.

We recognise that this fee is likely below market rate, and it is our hope we will be able to increase that hourly rate as our small not-for-profit grows.

For this project, you will need:

  • Some experience working with Nationbuilder – either the underlying database schema or the API, preferably both.

  • Full-stack web development experience, preferably with Ruby frameworks, though a well-rounded developer with experience in Python and/or Nodejs frameworks could still be a strong candidate.

  • Strong written communication skills – our team will need updates from you in a less technical language so they can understand.

  • Ability to code, experiment, test, and QA independently and then show your work for peer review.


  • Maintain NationBuilder theme (HTML, Liquid, SCSS) according to brand guidelines and campaigners' feature requests

  • Maintain our deployment of Speakout (Ruby/Padrino, Postgres, Heroku)

  • Collaborate on Github and Slack with an international team of developers building new Speakout features, and deploy occasional updates to the code base

Duration: For the right person, this project could become a more long-term arrangement where we could employ you as the Tech Director at ActionStation if that were something you were interested in. Otherwise, the role is flexible but we would require a commitment of at least six months.
