To: The Governor-General, Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae,

Please take immediate steps to call for the establishment of a high calibre, non-partisan Royal Commission to investigate the inner workings of government in New Zealand and recommend a form of governance that has integrity, is truly democratic, and fit for the 21st century.

Nicky Hager's book 'Dirty Politics' showed how urgently the state of our democracy needs repair and this week, as more and more allegations from Dirty Politics are shown to be true, [1] we have a critical window to take real action by calling for a Royal Commission to clean up politics.

Our current democratic crisis is bigger than Dirty Politics. Last year the Law Society reported to the UN that our Parliament had been used to pass a series of acts stripping away citizens’ rights and freedoms.[2] Transparency International has expressed concerns about growing weaknesses in our public institutions.[3] The community sector reports it cannot speak freely for fear of “biting the hand that feeds it”,[4] the people of Christchurch are waiting for the restoration of local democracy,[5] Glenn Greenwald and Edward Snowden’s revelations about New Zealand's role in the Five Eyes network raise urgent questions about the state of our democracy,[6] and now official investigations have established that senior staff in the PM's office misused confidential information for political purposes.

Human Rights Foundation logoWith our ally the Human Rights Foundation, [7] we’re calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the allegations in Dirty Politics, and the state of our democracy more broadly.

Right now we need to keep the pressure on. Add your name to the petition and send it to your friends.

Petition notes and references:

Note: We’ve addressed our petition to the Governor-General. Except on rare occasions, the Governor-General acts on the advice of Ministers, so the usual course of action would be for Cabinet to initiate a Royal Commission of Inquiry, and the Governor-General to sign the warrant. However, because the subject of this inquiry goes to the heart of governance in New Zealand, we believe the Governor-General, ‘a symbol of New Zealand's leadership’ is the most appropriate office to address.
