He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
Kia ora ActionStation supporters,
Last month we launched a petition calling for Stuff and the New Zealand Herald to step up to the plate by correctly using macrons in their articles on and offline when spelling te reo Māori. I’ve contacted the Editors of both publications and presented our petition and I wanted to give you an update. So far, I have only heard back from the Editor of Stuff who had this to say,
“You (and those who have signed the petition) are correct that we don't use macrons, but that's not unusual to te reo Maori. We actually don't use accents of any sort in any language - te reo Maori, English, or foreign languages. So, for instance, we write café and exposé as cafe and expose.
If we changed our style, we'd want to be consistent for all languages and through all Fairfax's digital and print platforms. Now that some of our readers have raised this, we'll give the issue extra thought.” (Patrick Crewdson, Editor of Stuff)
I replied asking why they don’t then just implement the correct use of macrons and accents across all languages where and when it’s possible, as that would seem like a win-win, to which he has not yet replied. This was more than 3 weeks ago.
So, I’m writing this blog to let you all know that we haven’t forgotten about this campaign. I will continue to write to Patrick and others about this petition and I’m writing today to invite you all to do the same. Mass email campaigns where we flood the inboxes of decision makers can be good, but sometimes what something like this requires is well thought out and considered personalised emails from just a few. There were 914 people who signed our petition. 914 people who will get this email. If even only 10% of those people email the editors of Stuff and the Herald directly that’ll be 90 considered and thoughtful emails and that might just be what this campaign requires to cut through.
If you’d like to be one of the 10% then I invite you to share your thoughts with the editors. Their contact details are below.

Or if you are someone who has the gift of the gab, you can also give them a call.
