Powerful and well-resourced lobbying works, that's why corporations spend literally billions of dollars on lobbyists and advocates every single year. Opponents of real climate action or environmental stewardship have developed a remarkably wide-ranging and creative set of tactics to challenge any policy intended to address climate change.
How do people working on climate change move from reacting against dominant frames and narratives, to having our own messages emerge and reinforced? Simply giving the facts is not enough. This is a deeply divisive issue, We need to know how to have an effective conversation, no matter what the situation.
Over the next few months we are going to be running free trainings in key areas of active citizenship, specifically focussed on climate change. Together we'll equip ourselves with the skills we need to have useful climate conversations with everyone from decision makers and media to friends and family.
What will this training cover? We’ll learn how to take apart language, to diagnose what’s working and whats not and learn how to have a conversation with people who hold a different world view that our own. How to build trust, how to listen and how to frame what we want to say it a way that builds bridges, not increase the divide.
You will learn:
- The basics of climate change
- How to start a climate conversation
- How to ask for something
- How to deal with objections
- How to answer common questions/objections
- How to manage your own frustration
- How to speak in public
For people wanting to be more active we are looking at offering training in:
- How to make an oral submission at Select Committee
- More on public speaking
- How to speak to media
Dates and times TBC, but we’ll send more information out as we get better idea of how much interest there is.
