Unfortunately it seems Auckland Transport are hell bent on removing the pohutukawa trees on Great North Road for another lane of road. As reported in the local paper this week they’ve said that “they regret that the trees will be lost”.
It’s not over though. We’ve still got some legal avenue’s that we’re pursuing which will give us more time but we need to keep up the pressure on the management at Auckland Transport and get even louder.
Together, we’ve already raised the funds needed to put up Tiffany Singh’s beautiful artwork and people from all over the community are mobilizing with handmade signs up on the trees now alerting people to what’s happening.
The plan is to install the installation for Auckland Anniversary Weekend and have a picnic for the pohutukawa inviting everyone along to show how much support there is for keeping the trees.
But before then we need your help to call the CEO of Auckland Transport and tell him not to cut the trees down. So if you’re able to call Mr Warburton next week, sign up and we’ll send you all the details on the day.
The CEO of Auckland Transport, David Warburton, has already received over 800 emails from you and others who are deeply concerned about the trees. We’ll be providing you a script with what to say to make it easy for you. Over the next week we want to make 100 calls to his office spaced out over the week to maximise our impact.
Sign up for the day you're able to volunteer to call to his office and we'll send you all the details on the day.
